Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker. Cook on high for 5 to 6 hours, until soft.
  • Purée in batches in a food processor or blender. You can also use an immersion blender right in the slow cooker. If using a blender, open the center of the lid to prevent steam buildup, and cover the opening with a towel while blending (hot liquid may splatter if you don’t!).
  • Store sauce in a sealed container in the refrigerator for a week, or freeze up to 3 months. Thaw in refrigerator overnight if frozen.

Learn how to make this sauce on the stovetop for a quick alternative. 🍳

Ingredients:

  • 6 large carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 4 ripe pears, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  • Place the chopped carrots and pears in a slow cooker.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt. Mix well to create the spice blend.
  • Sprinkle the spice blend over the carrots and pears in the slow cooker. Add the vanilla extract.
  • Gently toss the ingredients in the slow cooker to coat the carrots and pears evenly with the spices and sugar.
  • Pour the water over the mixture in the slow cooker.
  • Cover the slow cooker with the lid and set it to cook on low heat for 6-8 hours or until the carrots and pears are tender.
  • Once the ingredients are tender, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture directly in the slow cooker until you achieve a smooth sauce consistency. If you don’t have an immersion blender, carefully transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor in batches, blend until smooth, and return it to the slow cooker.
  • Continue to cook the sauce on low, uncovered, for an additional 1-2 hours to thicken it to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the sweetness or spices if needed. You can add more sugar or spices at this stage if desired.
  • Once the sauce reaches your desired consistency and flavor, turn off the slow cooker and let it cool slightly.
  • Transfer the Warm Spiced Carrot Pear Sauce to sterilized jars or airtight containers. Allow it to cool completely before sealing the containers.
  • Store the sauce in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze it for longer storage. Enjoy it as a flavorful addition to a variety of dishes!

Tips for making Warm Spiced Carrot- Pear Sauce

Wondering if canned pears work? We’ve got you covered. 🥫

Cooking Tips

  • Choose Ripe Pears: Opt for ripe pears with a sweet aroma and slightly soft texture. They’ll contribute natural sweetness and depth of flavor to your sauce.
  • Uniform Chopping: To ensure even cooking, chop your carrots and pears into similar-sized pieces. This helps them cook uniformly and blend together seamlessly.
  • Balancing Sweetness and Spice: Adjust the sugar and spice levels to suit your taste. If you prefer a sweeter sauce, add more brown sugar. For extra spice, increase the cinnamon or nutmeg.
  • Slow and Steady Wins the Race: While the slow cooker method is convenient, don’t rush the process. Cooking on low heat for an extended period allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
  • Blend to Perfection: Use an immersion blender for ease and safety when pureeing the sauce. If using a regular blender or food processor, let the mixture cool slightly before blending to avoid splattering.
  • Thickening the Sauce: If your sauce is too thin, continue cooking it uncovered in the slow cooker to reach the desired consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  • Taste as You Go: Throughout the cooking process, taste the sauce and adjust the sweetness or spice level as needed. Remember, it’s all about creating the flavor you love.
