To those who don’t know, Falafel is a traditional Middle-eastern dish where fried Garbanzo bean fritters are served with cucumber-yogurt sauce. The fried fritters are then served in sandwiches along with spinach, arugula and lettuce.

Ingredients

For Falafel

  • 1 ½ cups Boiled Garbanzo Beans
  • 2 tbsps. All-purpose flour
  • 1 pc. Small Onion, chopped
  • 1 pc. Small Green Chili
  • 2 tsps. Cumin Seeds, roasted
  • 2 tsps. Red Chili Powder
  • 2 tbsps. Cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. Olive Oil for binding
  • 2 tbsps. Oil for toasting
  • Salt to taste

 

For Assembling Falafel

  • 4 -6 pcs. Pita Bread
  • 1 cup Tzatziki Sauce
  • ¾ cup Cucumber, chopped
  • ¾ cup Tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 pc. Small Onion, cut into rings
  • 1 ½ cup Lettuce, shredded
  • 9 – 10 pcs. Falafel

 

Directions

  1. Prepare the Falafel by mixing the boiled garbanzo beans, onions, green chili, chopped cilantro and spices inside a food processor and grind until it becomes a fine paste. Apply some oil in your palm and form the mixture into balls.

 

  1. Heat oil in a pan and deep-fry the falafel until it becomes crispy and brown before setting it aside.

 

  1. Take a piece of pita bread and cut it in half. Apply a tablespoon of Tzatziki sauce into its base; add one Falafel, shredded lettuce, some cucumbers and tomatoes before adding another Falafel piece. Apply another layer of Tzatziki sauce, onion rings, chopped tomatoes and lettuce before serving.
